With September in full swing, fall is officially here! The nights are drawing in, pumpkins are in stores and it’s that little bit colder when you wake up in the mornings.

We all have our favourite parts of fall, and one of my favourite parts is making my home feel warm and cozy in the last months of the year. Having somewhere to curl up with a hot chocolate and good book makes me feel warm and fuzzy, and is a great way of practicing the Danish tradition of Hygge – read more on Hygge here!

Each year, I find new ways to make my home fall-friendly, and in this post I’m going to share five ways that I’ll be decorating my home this year to make me feel my absolute coziest!

Add Some Soft Lighting

Lighting can instantly make a home more cozy, and it is a very important element of hygge. To achieve the cosy feeling of hygge, it’s essential for the lighting to be warm, soft and comforting. Candles are a must to create that dim, warm light so make sure you have a couple in every room. Fairy lights or clip lights like these are also very hygge, and can add to the cosy, comfy atmosphere. If you have a fireplace, use the light of that too.

Bring The Outside In

To bring the outside in, wood and plants are must haves in your home. Wood is essential for making your home hygge, as the Danes believe that the nature outside should be brought into the home. Think about investing in some wooden furniture, or on a smaller scale, some woody decorations and ornaments such as rattan baskets like these. Just like wood can help to bring nature into your home, so can houseplants. Whether it be a big palm tree or just some succulents dotted around, houseplants are a great addition to a home and, more specifically, a hygge home. Read my houseplant guide for some plant-spiration.

Add Textures With Blankets and Cushions

While including some hard textures such as wood to your cozy home, it is important to mix up the textures to provide variety. Having some soft and fluffy textures in your home can provide a good contrast with the hard wood but also add to your comfort and cosiness. Invest in some thick blankets and throws to wrap yourself up in, as well as some cosy cushions and pillows. Perhaps even try a weighted blanket like this to make yourself even warmer and cozier!

Include Fall Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy can be a great way of making your home smell autumnal, comforting and cozy. Candles can provide perfect lighting but also if you buy some with scents such as pumpkin, cinnamon or cookie dough, you can create a festive and cosy atmosphere and emulate the aroma of baking. This can also be achieved with reed diffusers, which also provide Hygge wood, essential oil diffusers like this one and wax melts.

Display Books

Books can make me feel very cozy – the smell of the pages, gripping storylines and the ritual of settling down to read in a big armchair. Displaying books in your home can be the perfect way to make it feel homely, whether it is on shelves or a bookcase, on a coffee table, or simply stacked on your side tables.

Let me know how you’re preparing your home for fall!

Lots of love,

Natalie
